For English/Socials we will be writing an essay about our opinions on Residential Schools. A rough draft of the essay will be due March 27th, and the good copy will be due on April 3rd. This Thursday, students are expected to have a rough outline (thesis statement and three topic sentences). This due date is so that students can clarify any questions on this Friday's English/Socials work block. We are in compacted curriculum and unfortunately have very little time to give towards this class, so there will need to be work done at home.
This is an opinion essay. Students are expected to write whether or not they think it is important to learn about and understand the history of Residential Schools. If students do not have an opinion, they can simply choose a side and try to prove their point. Students are expected to use materials given in class as evidence (such as Fatty Legs, shi-shi-etko video, shin-ci-canoe notes, Indian Act notes, and journal reflections).
If there are other essay topics I am open to student's suggestions as long as they are approved.
I have attached a sample essay outline, and the rubric.
