After applying for and receiving very generous funding from both the TD Friends of the Environment Fund and the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Brock IF 6 is very excited and proud to be able to run the Salmonids in the Classroom program this year. We have received training from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the VSB Salmon Coordinator, built a teacher-volunteer team, and ordered supplies in anticipation of our January 23 one-eyed egg delivery! Some of the environmental stewardship activities that we are looking forward to include: learning about the salmon life cycle, completing a salmon dissection, attending a day-long workshop learning about stream habitat and hatchery operations at the Seymour River Fish Hatchery, and raising our eggs through the alevin and fry stages to their release at Beaver Creek in Stanley Park. We also hope to learn about important connections to local aboriginal culture and future environmental stewardship opportunities, as part of our ongoing learnings as global citizens who depend upon and care for our local environment.
